The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) is advancing the digital transformation of the Nigerian Ship Registry with a new automated platform designed to make ship registration services faster, more secure and transparent.
As part of the initiative, NIMASA will host a two part stakeholder webinar on 6 and 8 October 2026 to showcase the ongoing automation and engage key stakeholders ahead of the system’s official deployment.
The webinars will bring together shipowners, operators, maritime professionals, financial institutions, insurers and other stakeholders to examine the new digital registration platform and its potential to improve the speed, efficiency and transparency of ship registration and related services.
Moving Registration Beyond Paper
The automated system is designed to provide 24/7 access to registration services, streamline application and approval processes and facilitate faster issuance of electronic certificates.
These features are intended to reduce the administrative delays associated with conventional paper based procedures and make interaction with the Nigerian Ship Registry more seamless for local and international shipowners.
The shift therefore goes beyond putting existing forms and processes online.
It introduces a digital framework through which registration applications, approvals and certification can be managed more efficiently.
Greater Visibility for Ship Mortgages
A key feature of the platform is its capacity to provide secure and real time tracking of ship mortgages and related registry transactions.
This gives the initiative significance beyond registration administration.
Ship mortgages are closely connected to the financing of vessels, making registry information relevant to financial institutions and other stakeholders involved in vessel financing.
Greater visibility of mortgage transactions can provide stakeholders with clearer access to registry information while strengthening transparency around transactions recorded within the registry.
The development therefore connects the digital transformation of the Ship Registry with a wider maritime financing ecosystem.
Supporting a More Competitive Nigerian Flag
NIMASA says the automation is part of its broader commitment to transforming the Nigerian flag and creating an enabling environment for increased participation in the global shipping industry.
The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NIMASA, Dr Dayo Mobereola, said the objective is to make the Nigerian flag more accessible, responsive and attractive through technology driven processes that meet international standards.
For shipowners, the efficiency of registration services forms part of their wider interaction with a flag administration.
A registration system that provides continuous access, faster processing and electronic certification can make that interaction more seamless while improving the overall service experience.
Testing Before Full Deployment
The platform is currently undergoing user testing, with NIMASA focusing on its functionality, security and user experience ahead of official deployment.
This phase provides an opportunity to test the system against the practical requirements of its intended users before full implementation.
The webinars will also allow stakeholders to understand the platform, experience its key features and provide feedback to the Agency as it moves towards full implementation.
That engagement is important because the effectiveness of a digital registry ultimately depends not only on the technology itself, but also on how effectively it responds to the needs of the stakeholders who will use it.
A Digital Registry With Wider Implications
The transformation of the Nigerian Ship Registry has implications across several parts of the maritime sector.
For shipowners and operators, the focus is on accessibility, processing speed and ease of interaction with the registry.
For financial institutions and other parties involved in vessel financing, the ability to track ship mortgages and related transactions introduces greater visibility into an important area of maritime asset finance.
For NIMASA, the broader objective is to strengthen the efficiency and responsiveness of the Nigerian flag while positioning the registry to support increased participation in global shipping.
The automation therefore brings together regulatory administration, technology, ship ownership and vessel finance within a single digital framework.
PrimeAxis Insight
The significance of NIMASA’s Ship Registry automation lies in what digitalisation can bring to the relationship between the flag administration and the maritime industry.
A 24/7 registration platform can make access more flexible.
Electronic certificates can reduce dependence on paper based processes.
Real time mortgage tracking can improve visibility for stakeholders involved in vessel financing.
Together, these capabilities can create a more connected registry environment for shipowners, operators, financiers, insurers and other maritime professionals.
The initiative also comes at an important point for the Nigerian flag, as the Agency seeks to make its services more accessible and globally competitive.
But the value of the transformation will ultimately be reflected in the experience of the users.
If applications can move more efficiently, certificates can be issued faster, transactions can be tracked securely and stakeholders can interact with the registry more seamlessly, the digital platform will have achieved more than technological modernisation.
It will have strengthened the service infrastructure supporting the Nigerian flag.
The October webinars provide the industry with an opportunity to see that transformation taking shape, understand the capabilities of the new platform and contribute feedback before full deployment.
For NIMASA, the broader opportunity is to use technology to make the Nigerian Ship Registry more accessible, responsive and connected to the needs of a modern maritime industry.
The automation of the registry is therefore not simply a move from paper to digital.
It is a step towards a more efficient service environment in which registration, certification and registry transactions can be managed with greater speed, visibility and accessibility.
That is where the digital transformation of the Nigerian Ship Registry could have its wider value for Nigeria’s maritime industry and the competitiveness of its flag.
